Description:
Matthew King is your average guy. Out of all the other new officers, he really doesn't stand out much. Black hair that falls over his eyes slightly, dark brown eyes bordering on black, lean body structure under the police uniform and caucasian skin tone. Matthew doesn't have the ideal body for an officer; he doesn't have great muscles or is he tall or burly enough to intimidate anyone. But there's something about him that just tells any opponent that he could take them down without breaking a sweat. Around 5'8'' in height, with no special amount of gym workouts... yet his dark eyes and stern expression warn people to not mess with him.
On the other hand, when Matthew is around his young daughter this whole facade drops down. No one would believe the change if they didn't see it themselves, but Matthew turns into a warm and caring father... even his eyes seeming to turn from cold black abyss to warm chocolate brown. Heck, he even smiles around the little girl!
Matthew wears relatively formal clothes almost all the time; button-up shirts and dress pants, maybe even the occasional tie. Rarely does he pull on a pair of jeans, but he DOES own a pair. One thing he has learnt to wear, is comfortable shoes. He really won't give a damn what the shoes look like, as long as they're comfortable to wear... which occasionally brings him trouble at the presinct when he turns up in trainers. But the one thing he'd rather die than take off... is his wedding ring. He doesn't wear it on his finger anymore, trying to hide the fact that he's still not over it from his daughter, but he wears it on a long chain around his neck.
Matthew broke his right arm pretty bad when he was seven, so when he was in a cast he had to learn how to do everything with his left hand. Even now, after over twenty years, Matthew takes to his left hand.

Personality:
Matthew is by no means stupid. In fact, if you had to put a stereotype on him... he'd fit in perfectly with the nerds. But by no means is he a push-over... no way. Not Matthew King. He's the very last person you would try pushing over. To put it into words, he's the silent type that stands in the corner and studies people... knowing much more about them, than they do themselves. Almost everyone would underestimate him, he is after all just a nerd... but in the end, that view of him will just come back and bite them in the ass.
Most people would wonder why King is the way he is... cold towards almost everyone, but he's actually a very warm person; especially towards his young daughter. The truth is, he's never really got over the death of his wife... the one woman he had trully loved. He hides this fact from his daughter, smiling for her and acting as if everything were okay... when deep down inside, a black hole is slowly growing inside of him. He smokes like a chimmney, drinks like there's no tomorrow... just in order to forget for that instant. He never does either in presence of his daughter or doing his work shift, but when he's got the night off and managed to get a baby-sitter for his little girl...
The two passions of his life: his daughter and his work... but apart from that, he likes to do two things. He has a small garage on the side of his house where he has been slowly putting together a car. Once in a while he'd go out to find spare parts from heaps of scrap metal, to add them to his car... it's no where near to completion and most likely won't run in years to come, but it's something he started doing as a kid when he found the car body. The other thing, is working at the music store. His late wife was a great musician, playing with the grand piano that they had in the store below their house. Once she died, he decided to take over her work... he doesn't really play any instrument, but she always said he had a good ear.
Even if Matthew can be incredibly cold and sarcastic, he isn't always rude. At work, he holds his head down and just does his job. He respects almost everyone at the presinct, and shows them the respect they deserve... sometimes too much so. Most of the time, King hides the fact that he's smarter than most of his superiors. He knows enough about the world, even if he is a nerd, to know that shoving yours superiors down is not a good idea.

Sample Role-play:
It was late evening. The late evening sun was reaching out into the cluttered room, flecks of dust catching the sunlight and glowing in the otherwise dark room. The room was filled with different instruments; from guitars to flutes to drum sets... nothing fancy, almost all somehow broken enough to be ditched by their previous owners, but still each could be played easily enough. And in the center of the room, stood a parlor grand piano. It was slightly covered in dust, a cobweb here and there, making the previous jet black color seem more like a dusky grey.
In front of the keys sat a young dark haired man. He pressed a key softly, cringing mildly at the off sound that the piano emitted before leaning in and reajusting the tension yet again. Once he was satisfied, he pressed the key again, only to go back to the same string to reajust it once more...
He'd been at it for more than three hours, taking each key in turn. Matthew King was tired from work, wanting nothing more than to go get something to fill his groaning stomach before falling onto his bed... to have a few hours sleep before his daughter came back home. But seeing the piano standing there, covered in dust and unused for so long... it broke his heart. Grace wouldn't have wanted it this way... Hell, she'd have gone to tune it herself years back... So that's when Matthew began the tedious work of tunning the old piano. He didn't know what it was, pushing him to do it... he just felt he had to.
By the time he was finally done, it was almost dark. He smiled softly, running his fingers over the keys and hearing the beautiful tunes coming from it. He closed the cover with a soft snap before getting up to go upstairs. The front door opened with a creak.
"Dad! I'm home!"
Matthew turned to look at his daughter with a smile. She was so much like her mother...
"Hey, love. Hungry?"
The girl nodded with a smile and the two walked up the rickety wooden stairs to their house, holding hands.
